The Tobacco Prevention and Cessation program seeks to achieve health equity by eliminating the disease and economic burden associated with tobacco addiction and exposure to commercial tobacco products. Mental Health America of West Central Indiana services Vermillion, Parke, Owen, and Putnam counties.

Too Good For Drugs

Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) is a 10-lesson substance abuse prevention curriculum. The program provides education in social and emotional competencies and reduces risk factors while building protective factors that affect students in that age group. Instructional strategies include role-plays, modeling, practicing, reinforcing, providing feedback, and promoting the generalization of skills to other contexts, all of which promote cooperative learning and skill building.

This programing is for 4th-8th grades.

Too Good For Violence

Too Good for Violence (TGFV) is a 10-lesson prevention education program designed to mitigate the risk factors and enhance protective factors related to violence, bullying, and aggression. Instructional strategies include role-plays, modeling, practicing, reinforcing, providing feedback, and promoting the generalization of skills to other contexts, all of which promote cooperative learning and skill building.

This programing is for 4th-8th grades.

No Fear Future Club

MHAWCI partners with Vigo County middle and high schools to offer No Fear Future Clubs. Developed in 1992, the No Fear Future Club program provides young people opportunities to learn more about themselves through service to others.

Club members gain an understanding of the important role each individual plays in the community as they organize various service learning projects. This club provides students the opportunity to be young leaders within their schools, teaching their peers about the importance of giving back and standing up against important social issues, such as bullying, suicide prevention, and the importance of staying drug and alcohol free!

Our “One Life” campaign is the newest addition to our educational programs. This program was designed to reach both kids and mentors.

In this program we strive to bring awareness to the value of life. We all have ONE LIFE to live. By focusing on mentors, we’re bringing awareness to the reality of substance and alcohol abuse that’s happening regularly and could be impacting kids they see every day. One conversation with a child, teen or young adult could have a major impact on the trajectory of their live.

Hidden in Plain Sight Trailer

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) trailer is an educational tool for adults to see if they would notice signs of use, or indicators of use, in their teen's bedroom. When you walk into the trailer you will enter a mock-up of a teen's room. Participants can then look around and see what they notice. Staff will then point out items they may have missed and discuss not only what to be on the lookout for but also how to have these hard conversations with the youth in their life.

Hidden in Plain Sight Backpacks

The Hidden in Plain Sight backpack is a part of our HIPS trailer, however, it is also used to help educate educators. We can take it to meetings and educational events and help teachers and school staff. Everything in the backpack blends in with what you might see in any backpack.

INDEPTH: Intervention for Nicotine Dependence: Education, Prevention, Tobacco, and Health

INDEPTH is a new, convenient alternative to suspension or citation that helps schools and communities address the teen vaping problem in a more supportive way. Instead of solely focusing on punitive measures, INDEPTH is an interactive program that teaches students about nicotine dependence, establishing healthy alternatives, and how to kick the unhealthy addiction that got them in trouble in the first place.

CATCH My Breath

CATCH My Breath’s peer-led teaching approach empowers students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions about e-cigarettes and resist social pressures to vape. Informed by tobacco youth prevention researchers and practitioners, years of real-world implementation, and a youth advisory board, it is the only school-based vaping prevention program proven to reduce the likelihood of vaping among youth.
